Something that i've been meaning to discuss for a while, what are your thoughts on post lengths? do you think short posts are acceptable, and what exactly is the limit for a post?
To me, I always kind of feel like I could do better when I make a kind of short post. I don't know, it's kind of like a subconscious thing in which I go back, and try to describe things more.

Personally, I think the limit is a solid 4-5 lines of text. Less, and it kind of starts bordering vague.

It depends on a situation, when you are just having a normal conversation or you are in a duel, its not really appropriate to have a 3 paragraph post. A one sentence response will often suffice. Whereas when you have a major action sequence fighting NPC's, you need to post more than, "shit got pwned"

Ever since joining otherRP sites that ask for a fixed number of words for posts I generally do from 150 to well over 300 on a good day

A post needs to be as long as it should be. Introductory posts are obviously longer than most.

But to be honest, if you're just posting a sentence or two, or maybe a few words of dialogue, it sort of puts me off. I prefer a bit longer posts. I know now every post can be long though, so try to include description when you can. Description is key! Watch this:

Quote :
TJ said to BK "Hey, how are you doing?"

Quote :
The tall cloaked figure looked at the knight in his glistening armor. With a playful punch to the shoulder, he asked him "Hey, how are you doing?" He smiled at the knight to show his playfulness.

That turned 1 sentence into a longer series of sentences, but it holds the same meaning. But in this sense, you know what is happening and get an idea of he characters.

We all make mistakes, and I'm certainly not perfect, but that's my opinion on post length.

I think, in general, about 6 lines is a good bare minimum for a post. There are circumstances where people don't have much to react to, but most of the time you can MAKE stuff to react to. I'm not going to criticize anyone for it, but most of the time if your posts are under 4 lines then there's so much more you could be doing.

I mean, show how thier brain works. Make assumptions or add details to things. Small gestures.... It all goes together to make a well fleshed-out character. I'm not saying you have to make 8 6-line paragraphs or anything, but if you're posting under 4 lines each time.... Well, unfortunately, your character won't be that memorable.

There's situations where you can get away with it, but if there's like 12 lines of stuff to react to and you send back less than 2 lines consistantly................................... Yeah, you're probably not putting 100% into the RP and it shows so horribly....

I always feel....off, if I type anything less than 3 6 line paragraphs. I think I got everything across well and all, but still, it feels off to me. I try to keep it atleast a paragraph, too.

Best thing to do is just write quick sequence of events and dialogue that you want to say.

And then re-type the same thing, but add more vivid description, and what the character thinks.

Description alone is the essence of a great post. The smell, sights, sounds, even what you feel and taste. Let me show you:

Quote :
John walked into the bar and said "Who wants to fight a dragon?"

Now a bar can be full of rambunctious crazy drunks, or it can be quiet, sleazy and lowly. But let's describe a rambunctious bar:

Quote :
John walked towards the bar. He could hear the faint sound of jeering and carousing. The doors were made of a different type of wood than the rest, probably having been replaced recently. He pushed open the doors and the sound of the men inside were cheering, singing, and having a good time in crowded place. The sound of sweat, beer, and burning wood was evident. It was warm, but probably not cause of the fire that burned red hot, but the howling men. John simply raised his voice and asked "Who wants to fight a dragon?"

Now I know I'm not the best at description, many others can do it better, but that's an idea.

Micro posts are lazy. I'm not afraid to be blunt and rude about it. I expect first graders to write complete paragraphs. So adults should have no problems with it.

As someone else said, you can add details even to a single line of dialogue. Personally I love using internal monologues and body language to flesh out a post. Ursa Minor was one of my most expressive character and she spoke one sentence across three RPs. The only time I would view a single line post in a IC as acceptable is in part of a long chain of back and forth dialogue, and in that instance I would recommend making a collab post to avoid just that.

That being said posts can be too long too. I feel like my intros tend to do that. Another thing I have been guilty of is people spending almost the entirety of their post restating what just happened. Doing a quick summary to show your characters perspective and internal reaction is fine. But I don't need to see the exact same action through the eyes of four different characters.

NoelBles hit on this and actually tried to help people out with expanding their post length. I agree with what Drummy said on how people can write too long of a post, but still, A short post really isn't worth the effort if you ask me.

Micro posts as Drummy said, just show that no effort was put into the post. It's kinda hurtful at times, because from this, it feels like a lack of respect to me.
