Selvanes twirled his sword in a tight circle, shield held in front of him as the four bandits closed in around him, forming a tight circle. They gripped their weapons hungrily, as if they would hold a large hunk of meat after going days without eating. One swung, and he danced out of the way, only to catch a glancing blow on the back from another thug. The stick snapped against his mithral breastplate, and he brought his shield back in a crushing backhand blow, hearing the clang and crunch as it hit the man's head. He fell to the ground, dead, just as another swung. Selvanes easily parried the blow, countering it with a stab, dropping another man. The other two whistled, and three more came around the corner, holding blunt weapons, and he swore, bringing his eyes to where his partner should be. The thugs stood in a line in front of him, makeshift weapons held out in front of them.

Selvanes put on his best intimidating smile, and said, "Alsrightsssss ssssscumsss, bringsssssss its on."

Ricochetting a shrill whistle off of the opposite alley wall, the flinching of two rather thick-skulled brutes was more than enough time to sink a pair of arrows into soft, exposed neck. Down, down the giants tumbled with a thud of wood and hoarse, final grunts.

Before the ringing clatter could die away, Delyn had already slipped from roof to cobbled alley, dipping through the darkest shadows. As the two assailants closest to their fallen brethren turned back with startled cries, a silent ripple of silver crossed the lead man's throat. Blood bathed the lingerers in a dull fountain, pulling their attention once more to the forefront, only to gaze upon a third pair of unseeing eyes.

Stepping gingerly over the corpses strewn about her serpentine partner — when was he not surrounded by the indisposed? — the hawk reunited her dagger with its sheath at her hip, brushing stormy feathers from golden eyes. A small smile rose to her lips as she reached out to brush a thought of playful teasing to the towering soldier's mind

<a flash of rhetorical apology and eyebrow raised, as if to say, "Oh, have I interrupted? Please continue.">

even as she drew her bow from just beneath the shelter of his elbow (feathered head barely reaching those taut shoulders).

Delyn pulled a draft of crisp, midnight air into her lungs and exhaled in a soft hiss, a predator drinking in the moonlit gloom and stench as though a day of brightest sun and fresh lavender.

Selvanes smiled, swinging his sword and saying, "tookssssss youss longs enoughsssss, it's didsssssssssss."

They dispatched the last three thugs with little difficulty, before Selvanes made his way to the seemingly leader and rifled through the body, something he hated to do. He procured a long cylinder like object, glowing slightly, and inspected it, sticking his tongue out at it, and noting it gave off a lot of heat. He handed it to Delyn, saying, "oddssss objectssss, it'sss issss."

Delyn lightly swatted at the serpent's hip with her bow and gave a great telepathic rush of elation in way of laughter to his comment. A simple, primal joy for hunting side-by-side filled her heart in a way that it never had during her time as a fledgling, and the hawk gladly joined Selvanes in the disposing of their quite ungentlemanly acquaintances.

A wince of sympathy curled Deyln's shoulders when her partner rifled through the brute's cloak, not fond of the task herself. Storm grey feathers crowning pale brow lifted in curiosity as Selvanes laid the object to her palm. Even as the gloom that seemed as daylight to her eyes, the cylinder shone with the radiance of flame, yet disclosed no clues as to its purpose through its outward appearance.

The shifter's head snapped sharply towards the mouth of the grungy alley, feathers at full attention at a muffled scuffling faint even to her heightened senses. When Delyn's glance revealed only a fat rodent in the midst of une fête des ordures, her stance softened, but only just. Golden eyes met slit pupils <a vixen swift returning to her den with fresh prey for kits, lest a larger predator be strolling afoot, all amidst a sense of urgency as though to be prompt in depature and securing of shelter for the rest of the night> with a questioning tilt of her head.

Selvanes motioned with his hands, sheathing his sword and slipping his shield onto his back, "leadsssss thesss waysss."

He looked around a bit, noticing the rodent, and flicked his tongue out a few times, only to receive the strong scent of trash. He shook his head, changing his eye sight to infrared as twilight began to seep in.

A soft dip of her head in acknowledgement, and down the alleyway Delyn skipped, breaking into a light jog that she knew would be easy for the longer-limbed serpent to match. Keen eyesight and hearing did wonders for choosing a path free from further brawl-happy travelers, and trust in Selvanes to catch the heat signatures any creatures she might miss allowed Delyn to relax a bit more along the journey.

A breeze rose in synch with the Moon, rustling feathers and stirring an ache in her shoulders as the pair navigated the winding maze of streets within the city's poorer district. It's been too many Moons since I've flown, and rarely one inviting such as this, the hawk mused. Resolving to break the fast she usually held around populated areas — favoring as little attention to her exotic appearance as possible — Delyn kept an ear tuned for a telltale sign of revelry and drunken laughter.

Only a few darkened alleys and scaled rooftops later proved the mercenaries' search fruitful. The young shifter altered her path to follow a nearby canal towards the bustling tavern-inn, pulling the hood of her cloak up to conceal the storm grey "hair" beneath. A sudden, unusual rush of uncertainty welled in the girl's chest at the abundance of male voices, and she hung back in wait for Selvanes under the guise of slipping the serpentine giant her pouch of coins to pay for rooms. Delyn stuck close to his side, golden eyes cast to the weathered stone as they entered the chaotic room.

Selvanes kept his hood down, and walked in wrapping an arm around Delyn's shoulders for comfort and support. The door opened, and in stepped a serpent man, infamous for destruction, but the rumors had caught up with him. Whispers were abound in the room, even to his ears. "The Silver Snake!" they said in hushed voices, "ranger and defender of the righteous!" he made his way to the bar, setting the bag of coins on the counter and saying, "Two roomsssesss pleasesssss."

The bartender, who knew better, nodded, handing over two keys. He motioned for them to sit down. Selvanes shrugged saying, "no more gold, has wesssss."

The bartender only shook his head, saying, "Snake, it's on the house. A gift of good will, if you'd please."

Selvanes only smiled, and nodded in recognition as he lead Delyn to the table.

Tension eased from Delyn's shoulders with the reassuring weight of Selvanes' arm. Still, the hawk kept her cloak wrapped close, golden eyes widening at the not-so-whispered exclamations across the hearth-lit room. Unconsciously radiating a surprise discernible only to her partner's intrinsic ties to nature, Delyn accompanied the serpent to a rough-hewn wooden table and sunk lightly to the bench nearest the blazing fire. Grateful was she for warmth on frail, avian bones this night of unnatural chill.

The young shifter cast a curious gaze across the motley crowd, comforted by the tavern's reverent welcome of Selvanes and the cozy shadows of her hood. For the most part, patrons had returned to their respective discussions, but every so often a head — more often than not, that of a barmaid — would turn in the scaled giant's direction. Lightly Delyn reached out to Selvanes' mind with an observation of half-hearted jest, <female wolves, all shades of honey and tilled soil, tumbling about a dire alpha male in hopes of catching his eye, a solitary wolf of storm grey laying slain a little ways off> the bustling women's furtive glances and nervous giggling painfully apparent to avian senses.

It wasn't long before the bravest barmaid began to make her way over in showy confidence, and the hawk lowered her gaze once more out of sight, reaching down to gently pet an old hound that too had sought refuge from the cacophony in the drowsy-making arms of the crackling hearth.

Selvanes ordered some simple soup, a loaf of bread, and two tankards of wine. They had the money for a good stay and a the meal on the house, even with more gold on the way. As the bar maid turned away, Selvanes turned to his companion, asking, "sortssss ofs a gruesomesssssss comparisonss, isn'ts it'ssssssss? Thesessss can'tss possiblessss paysssss thatssssss muchssssss attentionss to messs."

Delyn gave a faint blossom of joy-laughter to the serpent's mind at his comment, but only half a heart of an effort lay behind the "touch". She replayed for Selvanes the scene upon their entrance to the tavern, accentuating the murmurs of reverence that sunk just beneath the pitch of whispering flames. How could they not? You are swift becoming the people's hero, Warrior, the memory seemed to ask, its weaver's gaze still lit upon the floor.

Beneath waves of relief did her shoulders fall as the food and drink was laid upon the table, and gratefully the silent hawk broke bread, eschewing the soup on the chance there be wild kin of her own amongst the ingredients. Handing a half-loaf to the snake, she pulled tidbits from her own away to nibble slowly upon, feeling warmth gradually return to her fingers and toes as the fire and grains worked their magic.

Good-humor returned to Delyn's weary mind with a fuller stomach and tongue whet. With a strengthened mind-laugh, she offered to her partner's eyes a wry smile, and to his mind the image of a pigeon pecking at breadcrumbs before sending a memory of the strange object recovered earlier in the evening. Resorting now to nearly-imperceptible body language, she tilted her head lightly towards the stairs, curiosity wending its way through her veins to inspect it further when apart from potentially-prying eyes.

Selvanes merely nodded and focused on finishing his food as she motioned towards the stairs. He swallowed with a little resistance, drinking the rest of his wine and gobbling down what little bread there was left. He took her hand and lead her up, pointing to her room and handing her the key, before opening his own. It was a large room, with one wall occupied by a large window. A table and six chairs were present, as well as a large bed and dresser. A nearby door led to the bathroom. He shrugged off his pack and hastily started peeling his armor off, setting his belt and shield aside. When he was in nothing more than a pair of leather trousers, he pulled the rod out of the pile of armor, saying, "what'ssssssss couldssss she's wantsssss withssss thissesss?"

PostSubject: Re: The Righteous and Free; Hawks and Snakes, Silence and the Soldier. (Aura)   The Righteous and Free; Hawks and Snakes, Silence and the Soldier. (Aura) EmptyMon Jun 24, 2013 11:46 pm

Bemusement flashed across avian features at Selvanes' sudden haste. Not a moment later he was sweeping her up from the table by the hand, her hood thrown back with the swiftness of their departure. A voiceless gasp fell from Delyn's lips as she struggled to regain her silken sanctuary, but it was too late; open stares — some more hostile than others — to her golden eyes and exotic plumage brought searing heat to her cheeks and unsteadiness of step, particularly unfortunate as the shifter trailed on her partner's heels up the creaking flight of stairs.

Delyn felt the cool brass fall against her palm, confusion mounting as Selvanes bustled into his own room and could be clearly heard (even without a hawk's senses) hastily dropping his gear. In a daze, the young feather-haired woman ventured into the adjoining chamber, by instinct scouring every last shadowed inch for danger. Satisfied with the room's security and exceptional cleanliness, she allowed herself a measure of relaxation and slipped quiver, bow, and pack alike from her aching shoulders onto the floor at the foot of an excessively large bed. Feathers rippled eagerly with the movement of muscle, and instantly Delyn's ache to fly resurfaced; with great delight she noted a wide window just begging to be thrown wide, and yet...

Call me feline, the stormy hawk mused, inquisitiveness bubbling over much too insistently to be ignored for a simple, albiet much-needed stretching of her wings. What on earth was that token we pulled from those thugs? I suppose I should ask the Warrior his thoughts on it again in.. a clearer manner..

Before stepping back into the hall, Delyn shed her cloak, toes and fingers having reached a cozy temperature once more. Clad in the modest, yet maneuverable soft leather tank and capri-like leggings common of Oemnh'n females during early-fall months, she wandered to the serpent's door. A soft knock on the weathered oak, leaning leisurely against the frame, the hawk ran her fingers absentmindedly along the trails of tiny down feathers that wended from beneath her tunic and down along her arms, the soft grey quite visible against each pale-skinned limb.

Selvanes answered the door, ushering the hawk in with a wave of his scaly arm, sitting down onto his bed and motioning for her to pull up a chair. He drew his blade, smiling at the rasp of steel on leather, before taking out a cloth and wiping away any grime or gore. He handed her the rod, saying, "I really don't know what to make of it. It baffles me, to be honest. But, I'm not much of a mage myself."

Inquisitiveness coaxing forth a glimmer of the wide-eyed fledgling she once had been, the hawk skipped into the room and, with an inhuman lightness, hopped up to perch upon the back of a raggedy armchair beside Selvanes' bed. Very much the picture of her ancestral fauna, she was, balanced in a comfortable crouch, knees tucked to her chest, plumage visibly curling across each limb and peppering her hips where tank didn't quite meet trousers. With a soft nod of thanks, Delyn eagerly inspected the token lifted from the pair's assailants.

From time to time the stormy feathers crowning her uncovered head would lift in a sudden burst of intrigue, only to subsequently fall as the cylinder gave away no hints. At the word "mage", Delyn gave the curious object a half-hearted swish and flick, transmitting to Selvanes' mind the image of sparks and mist flowering from the glowing cylinder in an expression of pondering. Fingers curled along the warm, illuminated surface. Then, a light-hearted shrug <gilded weighing scales, their prize upon one side, golden coins cupped and overflowing from the other dish>, as if: Perhaps we could fetch a hearty sum, at the very least?

Selvanes shook his head, taking the vial and looking through the red glow source inside of it. He tested the ends, wondering what he could open the cylinder, but shook his head at no such luck. The clinking of gold held many promises, but he wasn't willing to give up the strange object without discovering what it was first.

"First the mystery, then the pay."

A soft exhale fell from avian lips to accompany another of the bird's unique, psychic "laughs". As if I could have ever doubted your curiosity, said her soft smile to the serpent reposed across the homely bed.

In a sudden, graceful movement Delyn leaned forward, abandoning her perch atop the ragged armchair to stretch out feet for wooden floor, landing as light on her toes as any feather from her form. Hands free of the strange little parcel, the young woman left Selvanes to any further musings and stepped with nimble feet towards the dresser, sneaking a closer look at the nigh-alarming amount of gear and weapons stashed atop the cabinet there.

Mithril glinted with no less beauty nor strength under such winter-dim light, each chained link bearing proudly the labor and intense devotion of its bearer. No longer adorning the towering serpent, it was startling to the young hawk just how thoroughly and with such ease the plates and mail dwarfed an average man's crafted defenses. After admiring the subtle scrollwork and detail of the priceless set for a handful of moments — having never truly found the chance before betwixt whims of clients and the occasional scuffle like this eve's — Delyn turned back to her partner. Ignoring the siren-like call of Selvanes' cracked window to her forgotten muscles, golden eyes lit upon the man's gray, chiseled face. With the inexhaustible patience of all wild things, the storm-feathered woman watched eyes and lips and tilt of head for any sign of a wish to continue conversation before instinct would have her sate the beckoning of a spacious, moonlit sky impossible to ignore any longer.

Selvanes took the cylinder and set it on the bedside table, moving to his pack a minute and taking out a few items, most notably a white pipe and a bag of tobacco. He filled the pipe casually, lighting it with a match and taking a large puff. He casually blew smoke out of his nostrils, opening the window with a hasty glance at Delyn. "Sorry," he muttered, blowing a smoke ring and watching it sail up to the roof.

He moved again to his bag, pulling out a large book, and thumbing through it. He moved to the category labeled "Cylinders," and soon spotted the picture. He read slowly, frowning at the bigger words as he pronounced them to himself. He glanced at Delyn, saying, "Oh, I'm sorry. If you wanted to go, you may. Sorry for keeping you."

He returned to his slow reading, tapping a little in annoyance when the author used large, scientific words.

Twin pools of amber crinkled beneath a bubbling thought-laugh as the man murmured hasty, unnecessary apologies to discover their patient observation. Through a whisping veil of smoke, Delyn regarded the white pipe with vibrant curiosity, pleased that each day brought continuous insights to Selvanes' character. Not for the first time — nor the last — did she now ache fiercely for her voice, for the chance to express all the complex, trapped questions that had built on her tongue since their first mission together, questions that unraveled into more questions that then might reweave themselves into a companionship of depth with this endlessly fascinating, distinctly honorable man. For the chance to truly express and properly portray herself beyond fuzzily-painted scenes, avian ached. For the chance to seem more than a stunted, slow-minded mute.

The pang intensified tenfold as the serpent pulled out and began to scour a weighty tome. When was the last time I discussed something with someone? Learned from another? Shared emotion or thought?..

For only a moment more could Delyn watch as Selvanes labored over words that she would share with him in a heartbeat, had she the tongue to do so. Though shame and frustration welled, bitterly searing blurred vision, it was in the space of such a heartbeat the softest feather was slipped from plumage and lain between the open pages of his tome, the gentlest brush of lips fell to his ashen forehead before the hawk — for already had she succumbed to instinct — rocketed from the window and into the night with naught but the soft crack of aged wood beneath talons.

Little mattered more, now, than to appease her long-suspended primal consciousness, though the stiffness of avian joint and muscle seemed plenty penance, or perhaps, escape enough from this hell of silence. Fury of the helpless, her updraft, bird of prey soon gave herself over to the Great Space, human consciousness slipping away.

Selvanes was a little caught off guard by the kiss planted on his forehead, but thought not much more of it as he closed his book and put out his pipe. He laid the cylinder under his pillow, grabbing his sword and lying it next to his bed, so that the hilt rested in easy reach. He left the window open, blowing the candle on his bed side table out, drifting calmly off to sleep.

His wide brimmed hat billowed swiftly, the black fabric rippling in the evening wind. His slightly torn, long leather coat flowed behind him as well, bare chest apparent underneath the clothing, natural fur keeping him warm. A gold amulet, the middle of which showed pure black in darkness, was apparent around his neck, with matching rings on both his hands. The scent was strong, stronger than the last two days. He was close.

But not close enough.

He followed it, coming upon the dead bodies swiftly. One bare foot nudged the dead, flipping them over to see if they showed signs of being anyone important. They didn't, of course, just thugs, probably hired by someone to do something. He closed his eyes, inhaling deeply, seeing the scent hanging in the air in his mind's eye. The red, demonic trail. He followed again, just as he had before, into the the same tavern where the snake man slept. He approached the innkeeper, saying in a gruff, growling voice, "I need a key to upstairs."

The innkeeper looked at him warily, asking, "On who's authority?"

The large sword was brought out swiftly, out from the cover of the cloak. The elegant long sword lay there on the table, the air around the blade misting as the cold iron was shown to the outside world. "On the authority of the church. I am the Lunar Hunter, Jackal. And I require a key to upstairs."

The innkeeper looked at the Wolvinier with both fear and awe, handing him the key to the door without question. The blade was put back, and Jackel made his way to the hall way of rooms, stationing himself at the door where the smell lingered, kept awake by steely resolve. And there he waited.

The Moon slowly tilted his head, regarding with a jeering grin the desperate creature who tore across his sky.

Like a stone, Delyn plummeted through the inn's only second-story window ajar, clearing the tight space with little more than the whisper of leaves. Though equally silent, her landing, graceful it was not. Spots of red readily blossomed beneath a trembling coil of crumpled feathers and scraped skin, payment of a risky Turn.

Panic-dampened fury danced through her veins.

She had killed.

She had killed, and she had Fed.

Flame licked at every nerve, every sense on high alarm. But the shock was swiftly wearing off, casting the pain of a sprained ankle into fresher light and sharpening the red haze through which she snapped her gaze towards the silent door.

Delyn could see him. Coursing adrenaline reigned in the tiny echoing creaks of ancient wood and rasping fabric to hypersensitive ears: a hulking form, cloth on fur, cloth on steel

As if in a trance, the woman rose, limping towards the portal on her good foot. Blood and sweat, tears and dew slipped unheeded over the web of hairline cuts that covered Delyn's upper torso, back, and rigid jaw, tokens of a haphazard flight from the forest where animal consciousness had sought refuge. Deft fingers, bloodied but not by her own, whipped silently a dagger from its sheath upon the dresser as they passed. And all the while, that mountainous roar of horror in her head — The snap of the sparrow's neck Who am I who am I any longer? cowardice and villainy to let go of control over instinct careless, careless to forget despicable roots of hunger and hunting and prey and bloody meat for the ripping! to have Fed on prey beak talons bloodbloodblood taken an innocent life needlessly no better more heinous than they who ripped my family from me never wanted to kill Help, help! I have bloodied my peace-seeking tongue slain a helpless soul forsaken and despised slay me, slay this hunter loathsome hunter

Livid disgust swept through her shattered thoughts, disgust for the knife; the talon; the kill; what this man intended; rushed through vein and heart and throat and poured from silenced lips to pierce the hidden man.

<What. Do. You. Want.> hawk seethed through the solid, shut door, unawares of the acidic magnitude with which her rage hummed and burst forth as sharply and precisely as spoken word, though lips did not move from their feral snarl.

The seething mass hit Jackal head on, but it did almost as much damage as a ballon would to a brick wall. He calmly walked through the seething anger and fury, knocking on the door, never taking his eyes off the solid oak, never losing the steely expression that showed upon his wolfish face. He inhaled once. It was there, it had to be. There was a snake, also, and something else. Blood. Fresh blood. His mind raced as he came to a sudden and deadly conclusion, and he began to percieve the silence as one full of malice and ill tidings. Engulfing his arm in thick plates and shield, he drew his moon blade, bashing the door well of it's hinges and into the wall. THe splintering and cracking of what had been a sturdy oaken door caused Selvanes to start, drawing his sword with a loud rasp of silver on leather. He held it at the ready, and eyed the stranger, as well as Delyn, who stood covered in blood. A questioning look a lit his face, his grey features shining in mild confusion. Jackal growled lowly, saying, "cease your blood magic and drop your weapons, upon my authority as a Lunar Hunter. The Eternal guard demands it."

The twisted, knotted coils comprising Delyn's current state of soul would continue to thrum yowlishly with unadulterated furor, even as she just barely leans backwards in time to avoid the heavy door's undoing, staggering slightly for the persistent pain in her ankle. For the intruder's grievously incorrect interpretation of her bloodied form would the hawk allow the briefest flicker of amusement, before drawing the handheld dagger unceremoniously across the opposite palm and immediately flinging the subsequent curtain of ichor at his face.

In that moment of sparsest respite as the stranger fell beneath the dull crimson, Delyn would leap with her inherent, signature swiftness, ignoring the jarring complaint of her injury. Reappearing suddenly in a light perch upon Selvanes' headboard, she would slip the object in question from beneath its prison of fluff and fabric and dart once more through the still air, this time materializing in a crouch upon the wide window's sill.

With the faintest tilt of the feather-crowned head, Delyn would meet the beast's eyes with facade inscrutable, before turning to toss the cylinder powerfully out, out through the parted shutters into night of deepest pitch and shapeless shadows. The sharp, wooden snap of their closing would be the only sound throughout the room as the young hawk about-faced, uncharacteristically reticent as she patiently awaits this intruder's stated business.
